April 16-20

This week in Laurel Creek we did some art with printmaking, celebrated Star Day, had some big visitors, and honored the earth.

Julianne joined us on Monday for art. We used objects such as Lego pieces, bottle caps, and cardboard tubes dipped in white paint to render artistic structures on blue paper.

Star Day Celebration
For Ella's special day her family joined us for a special presentation on stars, complete with a video screening of some wonderful performance stars that helped inspire the famous moonwalk, danced by the great Michael Jackson. We ventured out to collect wildflowers and leaves for creating sun catchers. The final touch was a special Polaroid style photograph of each child, taken by Ella.

Terry and Tommy and the Yellow Yarn sound...

On Wednesday we were visited by some students from Berkeley High, on the TBS campus to research their English project on what their ideal school would be like. The Laurel students loved our "giant" visitors (much taller than Lyssa) and enjoyed having their help during Writers' Workshop and for some story time.

How-to Book Writing Project
For our non-fiction writing unit, we are creating instructional books. Each student got their own writing folder and special writing pen to begin the final draft. Stay tuned for a sensational Book Reading event!

Lucky for us, we were treated to a sneak preview performance of the Middle School production of The Lion King!

On Thursday the K/1 classes gathered to discuss the upcoming Walk-a-Thon. Students will be gathering pledges for our walk to the Early Childhood Campus. We decided to donate our collected proceeds to the Berkeley Free Clinic, to help people who "maybe broke their arm or are sick and can't pay for their medicine."

After the meeting the classes divided into groups to plant seeds for another upcoming event, the annual K/1 Plant Sale. (more details to come!) The students who were not planting spent time all together playing community games on the basketball courts.

Free Friday!

Friday was a day dedicated to nature and our wonderful planet. Heather, Levi's mom, joined us to read a story about the desert life and to help do some writing about what each child can do to help take care of the earth we live on.

Kyla, one of the Blackberry teachers, visited to show us how she presses flowers for her jewelry business, Impressed by Nature. The class watched in reverent (and rare) silence as she demonstrated the flower press and showed what the pressed flowers looked like. We went out to gather some flowers of our own to press. It was a wonderful sight to see, how each student took such delicate care to pluck the petals and place them carefully and artfully on the paper.

Other Friday Memories...

Spring is in the air! We will be sending out an email with the details of our upcoming events mentioned here.
Have a lovely weekend!
Lyssa and Ben
