Two Weeks of Fun-- January 14-25, 2013.

Ooh! Its been a busy TWO weeks at Laurel Creek since we've shared our news and photos. Highlights include our Project Study, which has honed in on Whales. Reading, writing, and math occupy many chunks of our days. No-Name Calling week directed several Read Alouds, and the introduction of the Bug and the Wish. We learned about about Martin Luther King. And of course there were all the preparations for the Winter Sing! Wow.

Math Read Aloud with a guest teacher.

Focused Mathematicians, working out math stories.

Building and counting to the teen numbers.

Addition Dice with partners.

Building boats and submarines to see whales up close.

Adding details to our "incomplete whales"

We visited our Buddies last week and got their help measuring body parts using cubes.

Kiara's Birthday celebration included movement activities led by Kiara's mom, Alyssa.

Happy 7th Birthday Kiara!

No-Name Calling Week included middle school visitors who led "Metta" meditations.
Each day the children focused their quiet minute of reflection on different concepts, including Appreciations, Compliments, Gratitude, and Kindness.

Very much in synergy with our no-name calling work, the Martin Luther King holiday prompted some important discussion on the Big Words he used to promote equality. The students created a beautiful quilt reflecting what we learned that now graces our front door. Check it out!

No-Name Calling Read Aloud, where Tanja introduced the Bug and the Wish.
Instead of calling someone a name when you are mad, use the Bug and the Wish wands to tell that person that "It BUGS me when you_______. I WISH you would ______."
These easy words have helped several children effectively and kindly work out conflicts.

Making posters about No-Name calling.
