Laurel Creek - April 22-26

The last full week of April is in the books!

As always, Julianne joined us in kicking off the week. Students wrote If... or What if... poems.  We took inspiration from the book If by Sarah Perry.  Some of the students performed these at the Friday Poetry Slam.

More poems.  Shape poems.

Outside work

Sand team vs. water team on our playscape

Tending our plants

writing and drawing

Math Survey work
Here students surveyed classmates about interests, likes and dislikes.  At week's end they began the work of turning the data into easily intelligible graphs.

When students finished some helped to clean up the classroom.  Here we are cleaning out the lunch bag box

Math Workshop
Both groups have continued to explore money.

 First Grade number talk

A Number Talk is a short, ongoing routine that provides students with meaningful practice with computation.  It can be a powerful tool for helping students develop computational fluency because the expectation is that they will use number relationships and the structures of numbers to add, subtract and eventually multiply and divide.  Here the first grade group is at work showing different ways to arrive a the number 32.

Buddy Fashion Show
We made use of some of our paper scraps to craft temporary outfits which were modeled by a member of each group.

The runway show

Poem work in preparation for our Friday poetry slam.

Creatures of the Air Day
We ended the week with a student celebration where we learned about creatures of the air.  Students created griffins, birds, and origami ladybugs and read about creatures of the air.

Thanks!
Ben & Cate
