Though you wouldn't know it by the classroom the end of the school year is definitely on everybody's mind. The children are already talking about their Summer plans and many are already thinking ahead to next year.
Current work:
We are finalizing our All About books
We are watching caterpillars doing their slow transformative work inside their chrysalises.
In Math we are working to tell time to the hour or half hour.
We will begin composing memory books as our last writing project of the year.
Here are photographs chronicling the last few weeks.
(A large number of photo files were corrupted and it took some time to figure out how to restore them. That on top of us reaching our memory quota for our blog has meant a delay in updating. We apologize and should be back on track now!)
Roots of Empathy
We have continued our Root of Empathy work by having Cate's son Jacob come in each Wednesday morning.

Simple Machines
Continuing our simple machine work with our buddies
Sunshine in a pot
We returned to the Chaparral House to give our potted flowers to some of the elderly residents there. We will return once more to check up on our flowers and hopefully plant them in the Chaparral House garden.
Singing the song My Friend and a song that Cate wrote about the 5 senses.
Distributing the flowers to the residents...
Free Friday
Math Workshop
Place value and measuring work
Writer's Workshop - All About books
Magic Day celebration
Word Study - The Grand sort
Here students are given a pile of words and they must sort them according to a rule. Some were sorting by word families (an, ap, at; ang, ong, ung), others by long vowel patterns.

Archaeology morning.
Cate's archaeologist brother came in to share a bit about what he does and led us through a simulated dig in our sandbox. We discussed artifacts and what an unearthed artifact can reveal about a civilization.
Roots of Empathy
We have recently looked at Jacob's favorite toys and discussed what this tells us about his current interests.
Origami Day
In the afternoon we celebrated Edward's holiday, which celebrated origami. Students made houses, jumping frogs, or action figures.
We had a great trip down south to the site of this year's Maker Faire. We made personal L.E.D. flashlights, built houses out of cardboard, and saw a number of inventions from life-sized mousetraps to robots of varying description.
The electric girafe
giant Tesla Coils
drawing bot
computer controlled TBS and LC (Laurel Creek) etchings.
Walk-a-thon
We had a lovely second annual TBS walk-a-thon. Thanks to all would provided support along the way whether through cheering us on or providing teachers with chocolate croissants. It was a great day and we earned over $1100 for Spiral Gardens!
Have a great week ahead!
