Week of October 19

Weekend News
Every Monday students write about what they did over the weekend.  It is wonderful to witness first hand all the progress they make with their writing over the course of the year.

Art with Julianne
This week Julianne pushed in to do some practice paper weaving with us.  Students used a black and white pattern.

Word Study
Ice Eagles this week began to practice tapping out words with multiple sounds.  They are working on counting syllables in words to be sure they do not miss sounds.  This is helpful for both reading and writing progress.  Students listened and tried to write down the correct spelling using letter sound knowledge.  Students corrected their own work as a group.

Fire Snakes practiced forming the upper and lower case letter c and practiced making the c sound.

Word Study
Along with sounding out words with multiple sounds and syllabes.  Ice Eagles have also begun to practice memorizing "Trick Words" through games like Red Light/ Green Light.   Trick Words are words that are used often and need to be known upon immediate sight.  They are also words that do not follow English language rules and cannot be sounded out.  Example: and, the, of, is

Fire snakes practiced letter formation and letter sounds through Terry and Tommy.

Math
Fire Snakes practiced number formation.  Please help remind your student to begin letter and number formation at the top (sky line) of all letters and numbers.  This will help with good habits that will eventually lead to beautifully legible handwriting and the ability to write with the greatest speed.

Morning Academic Choice
Like Afternoon Choice, students get to choose activities to partake in.  During Morning Choice students have the choice of math or literacy games and activities.  Specific games and activities change everyday.  Morning Choice allows brains to warm up, and is a fun way to begin the day.

Students play vowel BINGO.

Toy Jail
Sometimes our toys break rules and come join us at the meeting area and distract us from our learning.  When this happens we believe it is the toy that should pay the consequence therefore they are put for the day in TOY JAIL, where they will no longer inhibit our learning, but will remain safe.  Students can choose to put their toys in TOY JAIL during academic times and take them out to play during recess.

Gymnastic Show
Kiara, Chloe, Kailamae, Elizabeth and Cameron shared with us their impressive gymnastic abilities.

The class sang our goodbye song in the Bridge
